Premature Ejaculation
PE Definition
A lot of men would ejaculate even during the early phase of sexual intercourse. If this happens too often, this should be a concern for men. Ejaculating sooner during a sexual activity often results to a non-satisfactory sexual experience. Your partner may even feel more disappointed with this situation. Premature ejaculation is a serious concern that must be immediately addressed.
Among men, premature ejaculation is a serious sexual problem. According to research, one of every three men has the chance to experience premature ejaculation at a certain time.
Premature ejaculation is a result of a number of biological and psychological factors. While this could be a very embarrassing topic, premature ejaculation remains a treatable condition.
Some of the treatments for premature ejaculation include psychological counseling, medications, and sexual techniques. In some cases, a combination of these may work.
Symptoms of Premature Ejaculation
The main sign of premature ejaculation is apparently ejaculation even before it is expected. Essentially, it causes distress to both the male and female. In other situations, premature ejaculation may also occur like during masturbation.
Medical experts classify premature ejaculation as primary or lifelong and secondary or acquired.
The International Society for Sexual Medicine said lifelong premature ejaculation has the following characteristics:
- Ejaculation that happens only after 2 minutes or even sooner of penetration to the vagina
- Not being able to delay ejaculation during vaginal penetrations
- Occurrence of some unpleasant personal consequences such as frustration or distress. Sometimes, there is avoidance of sexual intimacy
Actually, the International Society for Sexual Medicine claimed that there are no enough sources of secondary or acquired type of premature ejaculation. Thus, there are limited published scientific data on the occurrence of this type of premature ejaculation.
In a manual published by the American Psychiatric Association called the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, details of secondary premature ejaculation are as follows:
- Results to personal distress and problems; relationships may also be affected
- Recurrent or persistent ejaculation even with minimal stimulation; this may happen before, during or after penetration.
- Suddenly develops even if you’ve already have satisfying sexual relationships before.
Is there a need to see a doctor?
Consulting a doctor would help you fix the problem the right way. Bear in mind that your relationship with your partner could suffer if you would not act on it right away. Do not feel too embarrassed since it is always better to treat your sexual problem than suffer from it your whole lifetime.
What are the causes of premature ejaculation?
The absolute cause of premature ejaculation is not actually identified up to now. Before, there was a notion that the real cause of premature ejaculation is something psychological. However, the concept of premature ejaculation is a complex one that involves biological and psychological factors.
Psychological Causes
Some medical experts think that early sexual activities or experiences may actually lead to a pattern that could mean a problem later on. Some of the cases include:
- Cases where you hurried reaching the climax of the intercourse to avoid discovery of the problem;
- Guilty feelings that could actually push you to rush in during sexual activities.
Some other factors associated with premature ejaculation are the following:
- Anxiety. A lot of men who experience premature ejaculation may also experience problems related with anxiety. They may be anxious on different aspects, but their sexual performance is normally affected.
- Erectile dysfunction. Men who have problems on their erection have this tendency to rush ejaculation. In the long run, this poses more serious problems such as premature ejaculation.
- Relationship problems may also be one of the possible causes of premature ejaculation. Normally, issues between you and your partner also affect your sexual performance.
Biological Causes
The following are some of the biological factors deemed to have that possibility of causing premature ejaculation among men:
- Abnormal levels of hormones
- Abnormal levels of neurotransmitters, a kind of brain chemicals
- Abnormal reflex activity
- Some thyroid issues
- Genetic factors
- Infection or inflammation of the urethra or prostate
In rare occasions, premature ejaculation is caused by the following:
- Damage of the nervous system after a trauma or surgery
- Effects of quitting from narcotics and/or trifluoperazine, a drug used to treat certain health problems and anxiety.
While both psychological and biological factors may contribute to the occurrence of premature ejaculation, many medical experts think that biological causes may result to primary premature ejaculation.
Risk Factors
The following factors may increase your risk of experiencing premature ejaculation:
- Health problems. If you have a medical problem that you think about during sexual activities, this may cause you to ejaculate too soon. Example of a medical condition often related with premature ejaculation is heart disease.
